It's Our Responsibility to Tell the Story

It happened again. We took the evening to relax at the beach with the sounds of waves, laughter of children, and well-written books. As the air cooled and a slight summer chill settled in, we packed up and ran into a couple we hadn’t seen in a few years.

Relaxing at the beach...before the question.

As we chatted, the plans for the Arctic road trip inevitably came up. “Are you posting on social media?”

Honestly, no. At least not like I should be.

I’ve always viewed myself as a strong behind-the-scenes kind of guy. Being on the forefront of anything is a bit outside my comfort zone. I can do it, but it’s not where I’m at my best.

But the more I talk about our van, our plans, and our hopes, the more I feel as though I need to increase my presence on social media. I need to start sharing my story. After all, my writing began with the simple belief that everyone has a story; we just need to listen.

I’ve spent years watching videos about the Dempster Highway, reading blog posts about what to expect, and watching the experiences of travelers and vanlifers, and I neglect to acknowledge that no one in my circle of people has been on this trip.

As a result, I feel an obligation, maybe a responsibility, to our friends to share this journey.

What my wife Susan and I hear as though on repeat is, “Make sure you post a lot of pictures.”

Share you experiences

I’m certain we will.

But is it enough?

We want to capture the essence of this trip.

I’ve traveled to two of Canada’s coasts, and this country is vast, beautiful, and full of life. From east to west, and now from south to north, there’s so much to see and experience. The beauty of Canada changes as you move through it, and we want to share that with those who can’t make the journey themselves.

Join us as we turn the key on our van, Solitude, and discover a taste of what Canada has in store. From southern Ontario to the Arctic coast of Tuktouaktuk, we hope you enjoy the trip.
